How do I back up my kids old Mac with a 32GB thumb drive? Computer to old to update latest IOS. Tried to download update with no success genius bar said back up with thumb drive and put more RAM in.

If it’s large enough to hold the data, backing up works the same as with larger drives; depending on your needs, either drag-copy part or all of your home folder, or use Time Machine, or use a product such as the Disk Utility to create a bootable clone.
Manual backups of some items requires that the destination volume be formatted as Mac OS Extended; both of the other two methods described above do as well.
