how to restore factory settings on classic with windows 10

I have a classic Ipod, which Apple tech says is virtually obsolete (dang). I tried to reset to factory settings and the screen has gone white with lettering that of the classic mac print from their computers in the 80's. I used Windows 10 to reset but they recommended Windows 8 because I was told Windows 10 is not compatible. I tried Windows 8 but same problem. I really don't want to have to scrap this one and update, any suggestions?
