It sounds like you cannot resume the Mac OS X 10.11 installer from the Mac App Store and it seems to be stuck. I would start by restarting the computer and trying again. This sounds simple, but it's where I would start.If it persists after you restart the computer, I would next delete the El Capitan installer from your Applications folder, download it again from the Mac App Store, and install it again. There may have been something wrong with the installer when it was downloaded initially.

Apps purchased via the Mac App Store
When purchased via the Mac App Store, apps are installed in the Applications folder. Icons for purchased apps are automatically placed in the current user's Dock. There is also a purchases tab in the Mac App Store where you can see all of your Mac App Store downloads.
