ios 9: notification time elapsed is wrong

I have notifications enabled to appear on my lock screen for my email and messenger apps. Ever since I upgraded to iOS 9, I noticed that the elapsed times for the notifications are inaccurate. For example, if I receive a message it appears on my lock screen and says "5m ago" when in fact 30 minutes has elapsed since the the time I received the message. This is frustrating because I rely on an accurate time for my emails. How can this be fixed? I have a iPhone 6.
