Q: Google Search not working from address bar in Safari

Hi,

Since I updated to El Capitan I am no longer able to run Google search from the URL bar on Safari. Bing and the others work fine.

Notice that when I type "google analytics for apps" the following URL is generated:

https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=google+analytics+for+apps&i e=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

But nothing happens, the loading does not proceed. In Networks -> DNS I have not manually added any DNS Servers and Search Domains but some defaults are added (128. etc.).

Can anyone help me? Thanks.

El Capitan issues all over the place:

EL CAPITAN ISSUE 1: Google.co.uk and Google.com and Safari search bar (using google) NOT working.

I reverted back to El Capitan 10.11.0 (from 10.11.2) to check if there was a difference from before as I thought maybe updates were installed and broke my browsing experience.

I did a complete erase and install. Everything GONE. For the second time! Sadly, the problem persists.

I prevented Safari from being updated to see if it could be due to later updates. But still, google searches never or rarely load. I DO NOT get an error message. I simply get a blank page with the blue progress bar not progressing. Just a reminder that Apple advised me to re-install Mavericks instead!

    Others are affected here:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/comments/3tqqwu/google_and_google_related_web sites_not_loading_in/

EL CAPITAN ISSUE 2: having to press the return key twice to launch a search in the Safari omnibar.

The weird thing is that I have to press the return key twice to do a search, so something is really not right with El Capitan and Safari.

See: "Have to press enter twice to search in safari 9"

    https://www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/3nxk51/have_to_press_enter_twice_to_search _in_safari_9/

    EL CAPITAN ISSUE 3: TextEdit

I also noticed that the TextEdit app preferences don't get saved. I like to have plain text by default but TextEdit only shows me rich text formatting. Very annoying. It is an issue that has also been reported elsewhere.

    Please see this link: https://github.com/mathiasbynens/dotfiles/issues/606

"The "plain text by default" and encoding settings written to com.apple.TextEdit.plist don't seem to take effect on OS X 10.11.1. New files are still being created in Rich Text mode, and TextEdit preferences UI shows "Automatic" as the encoding setting for both reading and writing, whereas I would expect to see "UTF-8"."

OS X El Capitan is by far the worst update Apple ever released. It is plagued with bugs and I am tired to be their guinea pig.

So I can confirm I am plagued by these issues on 10.11.0 and 10.11.1 and 10.11.2.

My internet provider is EE (UK) and I am using 4G broadband with a Huawei e5573s-320.

Everything works fine with google on iPhone and iPad connected via wifi also, and google works fine with firefox, chrome and opera.

El Capitan and Safari 9.0 are beta software and Apple doesn't care if our user experience gets ruined because of their need to break features in order to push other features that are poorly implemented.

Notice how the link I provided are from posts dating from the past month or so. It is definitely El Capitan.

Very sad Apple customer here, and what a waste of my time

I will submit these as feedback to apple. Please do the same. Let them know El Capitan is a horrible piece of software.

I am not yet using El Capitano, I have just reinstalled Yosemite and do have exactly the same problem with Safari (Version 9.0.2 (10601.3.9)).

No search in the address bar possible at all. I am so so sad that it is getting worse with Apple every day.

I had the same problem with Yosemite and I have it now after I updated to El Captain. It actually is not working also on Google chrome with the same frequency as in Safari that's why I suspect it may be more of a wifi problem in OSX.

I am hard lined in and it makes no difference in the disorder. I think the problem goes beyond wifi.

El Capitan is the first OS version that I regret installing. I have a year-old Macbook Pro, so the computer is not the issue, but everything about El Capitan is slower, especially Safari. Chrome and Firefox are not slower at all. I can't believe that Apple has yet to fix the many, many issues with this abysmal operating system. Search is slow. Page loading is slow. In desperation I regularly have tried shutting down the browser window and restarting but nothing works. Not even rebooting the computer. I hate El Capitan, and shame on Apple for letting this linger so long.

I´m having the same problem. Restarting Safari will make it work again but it constantly stops working. Frustrating.

    And same here:

    * I need to type return twice to launch a search from the address bar

    * Most Google services won't load, or will take a lot of time to load

Note this problem only exist in Safari; no problem with Chrome, for instance.

    Same here.

Other search engines in Safari work, Google does not most of the time. Every now and then it works all of the sudden as expected however.

This exact same thing happens to me all the time. Quitting Safari fully seemed to help, however not for long. I have found that disabling DNS prefetching makes a big difference too. Quit Safari first then try the below command in terminal:

defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false

    Haven't had the issue since.
