One USB not working

My MBP 2012 USB stopped working when I upgraded to El Capitan. (Both USB slots were fully functional before upgrade) Although restarting did not help, reseting PRAM restored one of my USB slots to fully functional state. The other USB only powers my android phone but nothing is recognized. I cannot perform SMC reset because one of the screws on backplate is stuck and cannot not pull it out (the screw is intact, but 3 screwdrivers were destroyed). Any ideas?

A 2012 MBP does not have to have the battery taken out. Please read the SMC instructions carefully:
