Why am I getting a no entry sign at startup?

MY apple mac recently stopped working, and a no entry sign started to appear at startup and I couldnt Get any further to log in. I have tried loads of suggestions and have tried to safe boot the computer but that does not work either! I don't know how to fix this and any ideas would be much appreciated.
