Why isn't iMessage working between iOS 8 and iOS9?

If I text someone that has iOS 8 still, my iMessage will start as blue, not say delivered (but sometimes the other person receives it, sometimes they don't), then re-sends as text message causing duplicate messages to send. I have the up to date iOS 9.02 version on an iPhone 6 plus. It seems to work fine with everyone except those that have iOS8 still. I've done everything under the sun to try to fix it, even restored my phone. No luck. Then I saw a Reddit article that has 83 comments of people saying their phone is doing the same thing. Is this going to get fixed any time soon? It only started doing this randomly yesterday (same with the Reddit folks) and I hadn't updated from iOS 9.01 to iOS 9.02 at that point, but updating to iOS 9.02 didn't help.

My wife experienced an issue last night similar. We deleted the conversation, force closed Messages, restarted the phone and it has worked fine ever since.

I've done that, didn't work. Reset the network setting, didn't work. Factory reset my phone, still didn't work. I dunno what the deal is!

Same boat as me. I also saw the reddit page, hoping they fix this soon. Its getting frustrating.

So, I turned off "Send as SMS" in the Messages settings earlier today. It didn't work right away with the "delivered" showing up, but after about four hours now all of my messages are sending just fine again! I'm afraid to turn it back on now haha. But messages are now showing delivered as iMessages.

The Send as SMS setting is only to allow for sending iMessages as an SMS if iMessage fails. I'm not a big fan of it anyway, but it won't hurt to leave it turned off.

Delivered is showing up now because Apple fixed the problem, has nothing to do with you turning the SMS off. They fixed the problem last night so everything should be good again

I'm not sure why you responded to me, as I did not indicate that turning SMS off had anything to do with fixing this. I just stated what the purpose of the Send as SMS switch is for.
