i want to use my old iPhone 5 as an iPod

I am currently using a iPhone 6 plus, but i want to use my old iPhone 5 as an iPod but it says i need a sim card. it asks me to put in a sim card before i can set up the phone. Why is this if i just want to use it on wifi?

A SIM is necessary to activate the phone, if you wiped it and it needs to finish being activated. It does not have to be an active SIM, just not one that has not been blacklisted. You can use the one from your current device if you wish, then after activation, you can remove it. Then all you need to do is turn on Wi-Fi and then you can activate the iMessage.
