Macbook sleeps when closing lid after shutdown

as in the the title, after installing El Capitan on my 2012 Macbook last Sunday, everything works fine and is much snappier than before except after shutdown, when I close the lid of my macbook, the sleep light comes on. If I lift the lid open, the light turns off. It takes a good minute and half for the light to be off even when the Macbook lid is closed. Mind you, the screen is completely off. I've reset the SMC but nothing changed.

Any suggestions?
