Safari Virus Warning Alert???

Safari recently locked up with a new page captioned "VIRUS WARNING ALERT" and a URL "apple-mac-error.info/gizmo/mac/2/index.jsp" This also opened a second window with no visible caption or URL sand a scary warning about "System Security at Risk" and instructions to "Please contact the Mac Support team immediately at 1-855-266-8939(TOLL Free). That number got me to a person with an Indian accent. I finally got him to tell me that his company was called "PC.."something or another. Screen shot is here:

I assume this was scare ware. Was I correct?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Yes. Read Phony "tech support" / "ransomware" popups and web pages.

every time I open safari I get a similar message and it locks safari so it isn't usable...how do I get rid of this?

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, close Safari, and then launch it with the Shift key held down. If the message reappears, disconnect the computer from the Internet and erase that site from the browser history.
