Sounds strange but since I up-gradded to El Capitan the "/" button on my keyboard produces in Numbers a "+".
In all other apps like for example Pages it's still a forward slash.
Strange.
Anybody else noticed that ?

This change came in with Numbers 3.x. If you zoom in you will see that the symbol you are reporting as a "+" is really a traditional divided by symbol
("÷")
Regardless, the math should tell you whether division is working.
=1÷5
should result in 0.2
Where as:
=1+5
should result in 6

I don't use Numbers but just tried it when I saw your post. If I enter =2/3 it does display as =2+3 but the result then displayed is 0.6666666. Very strange.
One has to look really hard to see this.
