Firefox not happy with El Capitan.

My Firefox browser 41.0.1 has started crashing every few minutes.

This is a new problem since the 'upgrade' to El Capitan. Wondering if anyone else has encountered similar problems.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Mail

amacuser$ ... spot on, thank-you.

To add to the process as amacuser$ outlines, for 64 bit firefox a.k.a nightly

Close "nightly" (if locked force a shutdown)

get a clean boot (click close if you get a recover open application message)

uninstall "nightly"

shutdown

hold [control] - [option] - [P] - [R] and turn on your mac

wait for the "startup sound"

release the keys

wait for mac to startup

reinstall nightly

Now well into February, and I'm running OS X v10.11.3 and Firefox 44.0.2 -- and FF still crashes several times a day. I can always restart FF, but it's still a PITA.

One of the suggestions on the Mozilla forum was to try installing a replacement for the Mac's new (in El Capitan) system fonts, since the FF crashes often reported font problems. That's not a bad idea anyway, so I'm going to try that and report back after a few days. If it works, I'll link here to the fonts I used.

Well, that hasn't helped. I like my new system font, but Firefox is still crashing. And I now have v45.0, so presumably it contains some bug fixes. Not enough tho! Most recent crash, just now, even knocked out the automatic crash reporter. And that happened after a full Reset of FF done yesterday, which removed all addons, though I immediately added back a few widely used and reliable tools.

For me, the crashes usually happen after using Google Maps in a tab, and particularly in satellite view. If I try street view, after just a few scans around, the images break up and leave large black gaps. Crashes can also happen while watching a video in a tab in FF. So I'm guessing it's a memory problem of some sort. Probably FF has the memory it needs, but it's not allowing the video or Google Maps processes to grab more as they need it.

PS

For anyone who happens to want a new system font, I got it at https://github.com/jenskutilek/FiraSystemFontReplacement The differences are subtle, but if your eyes are as old as mine, it's worth the small bother to do the install.

This could well be an issue with the graphics card of your Mac. What model do you have?

I thought a bit of that info was being auto-included with my posts, but I see now it was not. What happened to that feature of the forums here?

Anyway. the crashes are happening in FF only, in my mid-2014 iMac...
