Optimize Ipad Storage

I used for the first time iCloud and uploaded my photos. I checked the box that reads "Optimize iPad Storage" and by the end of the upload all my photos disappear from my device. So Looked for them in my iCloud folder but i found nothing. i don't even see a folder called "my phot stream" or anything like that. Please help my work was documented in this upload.
