iPhoto will not update after downloading el capitan
After downloading el capitan, iPhoto will not update. In the dock, iPhoto icon has an X through it. What can I do to get iPhoto to work and access my photo library?
TIA.

If iPhoto opens from Applications...? Remove the old iPhoto shortcut from your Dock and make the new Dock icon the shortcut by control clicking on it and selecting Options.

Thanks. Unfortunately iPhoto will not launch from the applications icon on the dock or from iPhoto in 'finder'. I get the error message 'In order to open “iPhoto”, you need to update to the latest version." However the latest version is not available in the App Store.
So I'm still stuck.
Apple Chat support solved it. There is a new 'photos' icon on my dock, which I did not notice (between iMovie and preview). It is a white circle with a rainbow star. It is the replacement for iPhoto. Clicking on the icon opens the app and allows you to transfer the photo library.
Ah OK, I wasn't sure if you wanted to continue using iPhoto or start using the new Photos.
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
iPhoto is replaced by Photos in El Capitan and is no longer compatible.
Hence the X through it and in ability to launch.

This is simply not true. An up-to-date iPhoto runs normally on El Capitan,
