I understand that you are not seeing any progress when downloading OS X El Capitan. Let's see if we can get that sorted out.
I would start with restarting your iMac to see if that clears out the attempted download. Once you restart, open the Mac App Store, click on purchases to start the download again.
OS X Yosemite: Log out, sleep, restart, and shut down

Let me know if this helps or need further assistance.

Oct 8, 2015 6:36 AM in response to norm123by Varkoney_9,I'd highly recommend to stick with Yosemite for the time being...we've had nothing but trouble with El Capitan on our Imac it's..slow , buggy..id wait till it settles down and with bug fixes and updates..

If you are trying to download from the update page, click "stop". restart the mac. open Appstore, try again. if not working: restart, open Appstore, login your account, look in the Purchased tab: ElCapitan visible, if yes, download.

Oct 24, 2015 10:23 AM in response to jayceesoccerby jayceesoccer,I've restarted several times. When I log in the app store and go to purchases, El Capitan is there, with the tap that says "downloaded" and a message in red letters saying "an error has occurred". I can't delete it, restarted or anything else.
Don't know what else to do.

Oct 24, 2015 12:12 PM in response to jayceesoccerby norm123,Hi jayceesoccer,
If it shows that it is downloaded, you can check in either the Application folder or in Launchpad. You should see an app for installing El Capitan.
Mac Basics: Launchpad is the fast way to find and open your apps

If you still have issues, I would recommend that you contact Apple Support for further assistance to get it sorted out.
