transfer music from ipod nano to a new itunes if old itunes is lost?

Ref. ipod nano from around 2012 and itunes 12.3

I had earlier synchronized my ipod to an itunes on an older laptop. I then stopped using my ipod for some time and in between got rid of the old laptop. I did not think i needed to back up my old itunes music because I did not imagine that such a simple feature would be omitted (transferring music, media from ipod to itunes).

So now, what do I do?

Copying from a portable media player to a laptop seems like such a basic function. Why is it not allowed?

I mean what else will apple stop us from doing? Will they start telling us what to wear and what to eat in order to receive upgrades in the future too?

Very authoritarian!

iPod nano, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

You can transfer your iTunes store purchases directly from your iPod as detailed here

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

For the rest of your music, such as songs you ripped from CDs, you will need to use third party software such as TouchCopy.

I had it recommended to me on Apple support communities here, worth checking this article out...
