Q: My Epson WF-3640 does not scan to my iMac since El Capitan using the ADF. Please help!

I updated recently to El Capitan. In the recent past I used to scan pages by feeding the on the top feeder of my Epson WF-3640, select the computer to scan them to from the touch screen of the printer and click the start button. All my pages would magically get scan and transferred to my iMac.... Since El Capitan, I have done ALL update possible from Epson to the Apple store ones and this does NOT work anymore... It says "Communication error. Check if the computer is connected". It is connected... I can do everything else! I can print from the computer and scan if I put one page at a time of the printer (glass) and from the Epson app on the imac scan the document... However when having several scan to do, to be able to feed them and send them to the computer was SUPER handy... Any idea how to fix this?

    Greetings SchweizerPA,

Thank you for being a member of the Apple Support communities and for asking this question!

It sounds like you have completed a lot of great troubleshooting already, yet your printer will still not scan as it once did. To continue the troubleshooting process, I would suggest working through the following steps from the included article.

If you have some other printing issue

These steps may resolve printing issues that have no other clear cause:

    1. Open the Printers & Scanners pane of System Preferences, then select your printer and click the minus sign (-) to remove the printer from the list.
    2. Follow the steps in the previous section to add your printer.
    3. If the issue persists, reset the printing system, then follow the steps in the previous section once more.

If the issue remains unresolved, take these final steps to move aside any currently installed printer drivers:

    1. Reset the printing system again.
    2. Rename the folder at /Library/Printers:

      • From the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder. Then type /Library and click Go.
      •
      • Click once on the Printer folder to select it, then press Return to begin renaming the folder. Type Printers-old, then press Return to save the new name.
    3. Follow the steps in the previous section once more.

Thank you for your answer. Unfortunately, it does not change a thing, beside the fact that now I have a Printers-old folder AND a Printers folder in my Library ;-)... When my ADF if fed, I select scan to computer through USB and here is the image that appears: IMG_0112.jpg

Isn't it about El Capitan that is in need of some updates meaning Epson that needs to come up with a fix?

    Thanks

You're lucky you can print!  When I updated to El Capitan my WF-3640 won't even print or scan any more.  I tried downloading new drivers from Software Update and it errors out.  I tried using Epson's drivers from the website and it unexpectedly quits.  It's funny too because Epson's site lists this print as compatible with El Capitan.  Pfft!

Hey I found a solution for my printing and scanning!  I had to use the uninstaller in  Applications -> Epson Software folder.  Once I uninstalled all available options I went to Epson's website for El Capitan Support http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/SupportCapitan.jsp?UseCookie=yes and I re-downloaded and ran the installer.  After the installer finished I did the setup and all is working again!  I hope it helps.

I now only have one method to scan, and it barely works.

I did not have uninstall in applications/epson software, but I did download the El Capitan compatible driver and installed. Now there in no scan option at all for the printer. I have done the process twice; deleted the old printers, installed new driver, added printer.  I get that same communication error while trying to scan while USB connected. There is no longer an "open scanner" option for the printer.

Only option is to use the printer controls, select my laptop and initiate scan - but it takes forever and I don't get to us the settings such as dpi, select scan area, name file, etc.

Lucky for you :-)... I had done this but it does not work. To make sure, Are you really having a stack of paper to scan on your printer, and sending to your computer from the PRINTER touch screen without using the computer to scan? Because I called Epson and they recognized that they have not updated this yet... I don't think it is supposed to work. So I am wondering if your scanning work from your computer (this I can do to). What I lost is specifically that one function to scan multiple paper at once from the printer to the computer. That one function cannot to my knowledge be done until Epson update their driver...

I agree with you. It works but only from the computer and by putting 1 page at a time on the printer "glass", which is terribly cumbersome when we have a stack of scan to do! But it works... After calling Epson, they acknowledged that this was a needed update... Hopefully it is going to come soon!
