iPod Nano software update and other issues

Hello,

My iPod nano is 8gb, small square, is this 6th gen, how can i find out? I entered the S/N and nothing found. I get an error message for the software update "iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server because you are not connected to the internet" - and I am connected to the internet. What is the latest version for iPod nano? I show 1.2 in iTunes. And I want to change the name of the device and don't see where to do this.
