Family Sharing Location tracker, without my consent

Is there anyone else out there that is shocked by Apple's location tracker which is automatically activated with Family Sharing? Were you planning to be located at any time by anyone in the family? Did you also give away your privacy at the click of a button without knowing it, being prompted or having the implications of joining Family Sharing outlined? Naturally, turning it off one automatically activated suddenly looks like I have something to hide. I understand that parents may want to be able to track their children (though even this is a breach of privacy without the child's knowledge or consent), but for adults to automatically have their location trackable without being informed is outrageous. I used to be a great Apple enthusiast but the charm is wearing off. Samsung looks better every day.
