Well, I use 1password and never use the download icon at all. I pracitcally never used it. And thats why I always removed the icon from the bar. I only have one icon on the right hand side, and thats 1password. But now in El Capitan, I cannot remove or reposition the download icon. Why not? Can anybody tell me, how I can remove it from the bar? Thanks.

It seems that the downloads icon only appears when you've downloaded something.
Click the downloads icon, and then click clear.
This won't stop it coming back next time you download something, but it does remove it until then.

Go to View --> Customize Toolbar. Drag the Downloads icon off the toolbar.
Thanks for your fast replay. But I cannot just drag it off. It just doesnt work for me. If you are on El Capitan and can drag it out, why can't I? I just formatted my disks and installed the OS brand new. Any other solutions?
I don't know why it's not working for you, I don't have your computer in front of me. The solution I gave you is the only one I know, I'm afraid. Maybe someone else will come along with another idea. :-\
Well, when I drag it from the bar, it just reappears there. And it is always on the left. I cant even put it on the right side.
Did you try holding the command key down and dragging it off?
Yes. doesnt work either. The cloud puffs but the icon goes back to where it was.
