250 of most recent emails download everytime i "check email" in the aggregated Inbox view

Just downloaded the most recent iPhone software. Now everytime i "check email" in the aggregated Inbox view, it downloads 250 of the most recent emails no matter what, even if i only have one or two new ones. This is going to be a data hog! Anyone know a setting fix I can perform to return the function to normal?
