Connect a mac with a dell ST2310 display

I would like to connect my Mac Air with a large display. It is a Dell ST2310 display. The Apple Store recommended I use a VGA connector and I just purchased it. I connect the mac to the display and I see the screen and it looks good. I have Mouse control on the screen but not on my mac. I have keyboard control on my Mac but not on the large display. There is probably a help topic somewhere on how to configure this. Can someone send a pointer? Thanks in advance.
