IPOD not sounding good in my home stereo- HeLP NEEDED

I just bought an Ipod video and ripped all my music into it. NOW, I want to connect my Ipod to my small stereo (Sony CMT-CP11 Micro HiFi system).
PROBLEM: I bought one of those cables that has a line plug (connected to where the headphones go) on one end and the typical video RCA plugs on the other side (connected to the LINE IN of my stereo system HOWEVER, most songs cant be heard at a good volume. If I increase the volume of my Ipod (not recommended by Apple support), the sound is heard with distortion (bad quality sound). If I decrease volume in Ipod, the stereo can not pull enough volume !!!! So, I can only hear at low volumes with good quality 😟
CAN THIS BE SOLVED WITHOUT BUYING AN AMPLIFIER ???
CAN CONNECTING TO ONE OF THE COMMERCIAL DOCKS IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE SOUND ??? The Apple DOCK (not to be confused with Ipod HiFI) comes with an audio output which I could connect to my stereo, but will that be any different than the ones for the headphone connection on the Ipod ??? (Could somebody give me a technical answer to this ??)

ANYBODY HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE ???

Thanks very much !!!

Your not going to like this answer...

Sound distortion at high volume is somethign you will have to live with with a stero of the size you are talking about.

If you want to blast the speakers and maintain sound quality, you will need a system with higher wattage and larger speakers. This is a problem I encountered many years ago, and since then I have bought a 1000 watt amp, a 1000 watt subwoofer and several surround speakers.

I can now listen to my music at piercingly high volumes, with the house shaking, without noticable sound distortion.

When you turn up the volume to your speakers, you increase power flow to them. When this power flow goes higher than the speakers were weant to accomodate, you get distortion. A "no cost" solution is to turn down the bass and increase the treble. You'll get a higher pitch sound, which you could turn up higher without distortion, but it wont be as full.

Connecting two volume controlls together exasperates the situation because you get distortion from each one. This is why its not recomended you blast the iPod and Blast the speakers, and would also be a fator in the distortion you are getting.

Got your point. Due to my current budget, I'm not planning to buy a new amp and speakers at this time (maybe later)... SO.. I guess the question is now:

IS the sound quality produced by the headphone output (3.5mm line out to RCA) the same as that produced by the output at the bottom of the Ipod through RCA connector outputs found in the Ipod DOCKS (Apple dock, Belkin etc) which you can buy ??? (considering all other parameters constant: same quality cables, same stereo etc etc etc)

ANY IDEA ??? (I guess this is a question for the audiophiles)

Thanks

The answer is that, yes, getting a dock will help as you are getting line out signal and it will not be going through the headphones amplifier. You should be able to get a good sound quality through this and have the advantage of remote control. You do not need 1000W amplifiers to get reasonable sound - I too have a very powerful system but also have a number of cheaper systems. I can enjoy music on a cheap Sony radio cassette using my iPod although clearly it will not be as loud or go as deep as my audiophile system. On the whole, I would not use an iPod as a source in that case anyway!

"Do you know why the output is different through the earphone or dock output ??? Is there any technical explanation for this ??"

Yes, there is. It's because the headphone socket is drven by a small hedaphone amp that was never intended to supply a line out to a hi fi stereo. It's only inteded to drive low impedance headphones.

The correct way to connect to a home stereo is to use the line out socket on the universal dock.

Thanks !!! I tried the link and went to the forum on this product... Now I am even worse that when I started !!!!

There are many posts on the forum of people with the same problem as me and have NOT experienced any improvement with the dock... on the other hand I read of other which have improved quality and volume through the line out at the dock... WHAT should I do ???
I'll guess I'll get one of the docks and try... if it doesn't work, I'll just return it !!!

What do you think ???
Anybody out there got a dock and noticed a great improvement ???

Thanks
