Apple ID Password not being accepted to erase phone

My older iPhone 5s is not accepting my Apple ID password. Trying to erase the phone because I haBe to return it. Bad port. The password is good. Works on newer phone (5s replacement) and my iPad too. Why isn't the password working so I can delete / erase everything before returning phone?
