how do you reset the iPod without a password?

I have an iPod that I want to reset. I haven't used it in a while and notice that it's linked (apple id) to an email address (earthlink.net) that I no longer have. So, I cannot get any emails at that address - it no longer exists. The iPod won't let me re-set it unless I have the apple id password for that email address. I thought I entered it correctly, but it will not let me log on and I can't re-set it because I can't get email at the earthlink.net address. So, I am unable to re-set. Isn't there some work-around? Thanks!
