Time Capsule not assigning ip addresses?

I have four web cams connected to my Time Capsule by ethernet cable. They worked fine until today when I can no longer connect to them nor find any ip address for each camera. I've rebooted but no joy. Is there a way to see all the ip assignments - both wired and wireless? Is there a reason why these devices would no longer be assigned an address?

Thanks

What is the whole network setup?

Are you using a modem router? What make and model is the modem?

Is the TC in bridge or router mode? We have found occasionally it can autonomously fall back to bridge when it should be router.. and other strange stuff.

What model is the TC?

I have four web cams connected to my Time Capsule by ethernet cable.

I also need to know a bit more.. the TC has only 3 LAN ports so I presume you are running a switch or something.. have you tried plugging at least one camera directly into the TC.

Depending on the model of the TC and your computers.. a v5 utility is far more useful than the v6.. ie.. it is a utility.. whereas the v6 is more pretty pictures.

Run v5 utility and if the TC is working in router mode it will show IP of all clients not just wireless.

I have a Ubee cable modem (DDW3611) which the cable company put into a bridge mode. Port one on the modem is connected to the wan port on the time capsule. The TC is in the DHCP and NAT mode. I tried v5 and it seems to be not supported with EL Captain??

I tried running an ethernet cable direct from the cam to the TC. The connection at the cam shows a connection (sold red power and flashing green data) but still no joy. Not too sure about the model number 1TB? - Why can't Apple just print "Model: XYZ" on the bottom!

Why can't Apple just print "Model: XYZ" on the bottom!

It is there.. just in micro print or hidden.. or I have to admit on the latest one.. which is tall so obvious.. not there at all.

Open the airport utility and hold down the option key.. while you double click the icon of the TC. It will then open the full summary page.. which has the model right at the top.

Correct but it can still work.. google this phrase with no quotes. "airport utility 5.6 yosemite"

Click on top hit and download the loader prepared by Corey Mahler (it would seem easier to just give you the URL but then Apple would delete my post.. they spend time doing that instead of fixing the website!!)

I just loaded it into el capitan and it still works fine.. and then you can open the advanced and dhcp clients and see all the clients not just the wireless ones.

So that is very much a help when you need to know what is going on instead of pretty pictures.

It is still a good idea.. almost a necessity now.. to prepare the TC correctly for life under post - mavericks world.

Where it says Yosemite.. pretend it says, Mavericks or El Capo..

Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.

Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.

Setup the TC again.

Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.

1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.

eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.

If the issue is wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. ie plan on a first and second round of changes to fix this.. hopefully.. I will point out other steps that can be round2.

2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.

3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.

Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking.

4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.

5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.

In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,

Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).

You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.

However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.

6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only. Do the same for ethernet if you use it.

This has been really important up to Yosemite.. does El Capo suffer the same issue.. as yet unknown. but it never hurts to take control.

There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.

You might need to do some more work on the computer itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.

Tell us how you go.

It has to do with Apple's new ideas of making DNS discovery a mystery bag instead of a piece of standard network architecture..

The cameras are there.. and may even have IP addresses but the poor old Apple router has no DNS capability worthy of the name.

That is why you need to actually do everything in apple networks by IP.. fix the IP address perhaps on the camera or by DHCP reservation..

Or be honest and just say.. buy a another router.. a router that routes and has DNS discovery that actually works...

I prefer something that takes 3rd party like Gargoyle.. You only need a cheap router.. eg TP-Link WR1043ND v2 .. these are <$50 in US I would think..

Flash over to gargoyle.. then plug the TC into it .. bridged.. and you can use its wireless and hard disk for your network..

It might help to change the domain in the router to local since apple does not fix the domain prefix even in bridge.

Your cameras will delight in a much more standard DHCP server.. rather than what apple does.
