My messages will not quit, force quit, or open. This means I cannot restart or shutdown my mac. Nor can I view messages when I receive them.

p.s. this... > Force Quit > Mail > Force Quit > Force Quit... has not fixed the problem
Shut down the computer using the power button and then restart.

If you open the Activity Monitor app in Utilities can you Quit it from there ?
