MacPro - Driver Update AMD Radeon HD - FirePro D500?

Im a pro photographer having crash problems with adobe photoshop CC latest update to Camera Raw ACR 9.2.

It happens when selecting & actioning multiple images for resizing as jpeg (in the save image>option tab).

ACR hangs momentarily trying to do it’s job, then crashes. It works on 1 or 2 pics, but anymore it’s crashola.

This is new to 9.2 and never happened in previous versions, with me anyway…….ACR 9.1.1 worked perfectly.

Happens opening images from either Bridge or photoshop.

Dialogue box pops up saying (see screen shot):-

Camera Raw has temporarily disabled

graphics processor acceleration due to an

error. Updating the driver of your graphics

card may resolve the issue.

Choose the “Use Graphics Processor option“

in the Camera Raw Preferences dialog to

re-enable GPU support.

I run a MacPro (with Mavericks) 3.5 Ghz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5 with 64GB RAM so it has plenty of grunt.

The graphic processor is AMD Radeon HD - FirePro D500 OpenGL Engine.

I’ve tried searching for a ‘driver update‘ for mac for AMD to no avail.

Does anyone know of a driver update to AMD Radeon HD - FirePro D500?

Hi. Thanks for your reply. Yes I did have a long session with Adobe with the end result they saying go back to Apple & update the driver.....

I tried AppleCare with the result (like you) the the driver updates come with the OSX updates.

I was hoping the latest rush fix to lightroom might translate to ACR 9.2 ..... being the same engine and all...but sadly no.

So Im with you to update from Mavericks to El Cap....... (btw Mavo is very stable for me and all my various software etc thats why loathe to update)

But testing sounds the go.

Being a photographer can't say Im totally technically au fait installing El Cap on an external, fast drive like USB3 or Thunderbolt.

Will I have uninstall/install Adobe Creative Suite on different drives? Can be a headache (for me anyway).

Any ideas on how to do it with minmum fuss? Appreciated.

Then you were dealing with Adobe reps that need to be sent back for re-training. What they have told you is complete nonsense for the Mac Pro late 2013 with AMD graphics. There are no add-on Drivers from ANY source for the Mac Pro as issued.

There are for late-introduction Drivers from NVIDIA for NVIDIA graphics cards, but that just gives an indication of how dysfunctional NVIDIA is at providing Drivers at the required times to get included in system builds and product shipments.

The reason you get these messages is that Adobe has talked a good game about making their products work with the late 2013 Mac Pro, but has not actually done anything that produced substantial improvements.

Thanks Grant,

Yes, sort've left hanging with Adobe much like a rainbow beachball...c'est al vie.

I was really comfortable with Mavericks - all my old apps worked just the way I liked them to.

But I'll be upgrading to El Cap early this evening (aussie time). That'll be the acid test to see if this one tiny feature in Adobe Camera Raw 9.2 I rely on for my workflow actually works (or not) .....

Cheers

Well.

Upgraded to El Capitan and the problem is still very much alive & kicking. No AMD driver updates anywhere and no solution.

But seems to work batch 'save as' DNG or PSD funnily enough. Batch 'save as' Jpeg and TIFF definitely does not work.

Small feature, but major part of my photography workflow in Adobe Camera Raw..........

I've spoken to Apple, done all the updates. Surely this must be a software bug relating to the graphic processor (AMD Radeon HD - FirePro D500).

But Adobe refer me back to Apple then Apple back to Adobe and so it goes......

I run ACR 9.2 on my laptop with a Nvidia graphics processor and it works fine.

Im even considering replacing my existing graphics processor for the next one up, the AMD Radeon FirePro D700 which is an option when configure your MacPro on the Apple Store. But a painful bite at probably Aust$840 plus plus.

Any solutions anyone?

Hello,

Has anyone found an answer to this problem?

I just upgraded to El Capitan and I am having similar issues as above flickering and then monitor goes black. I am using the AMD FirePro D500 graphics card in a Mac Pro (Late 2013). I am running a NEC PAW272 monitor plus an old 23-inch (1920 x 1200) Cinema Display. All of a sudden the NEC, which is may main monitor, flickers badly then goes black. It runs briefly after a restart but then goes black again making it completelyunusable. The Cinema display runs fine but is too old to be useable as a editing monitor. I, too, am a pro photographer and sometimes work on very large 3gb files in photoshop. Not sure if that is even relevant.

I can't find a driver either and there are no software updates from Apple, feeling stuck with some very expensive pieces of hardware I can't use at the moment.

I don't know why it is double posting, but anyway.

I have found what looks like to be a solution for the flickering and black screen problem. For me the issue was the thunderbold connection. It seems the busses are not independent from each other. Go to http://macperformanceguide.com/ and read Lloyd Chamber's excellent blog about this. He pointed me to the thunderbold busses and their configurations. For my system that means I cannot have the second monitor on the same bus as the first monitor or anything else for that matter. For me the OWC backup drive system was on the same bus (#2) as my NEC monitor. See graphic below, it is how they are laid out and connected. I also downgraded to Yosmite for now. It took me one whole day to figure this out and restore the system back to a workable system. What a waste of my time! I hope this helps someone. Apple phone support, while polite, was absolutely no help at all.

The first responders at Apple support are really good for help with your new Mac. They are very patient and have a checklist beginning with, "is your Mac plugged in?"

If you are an advanced user, you should politely ask to be transferred to a product specialist in the product you are having trouble with. If successful, you will get someone who knows much more about the specific product, but has much less patience for "is the plug in" level of difficulties.
