It's a very long road between mashing the power button and seeing the desktop.
at what point is it doing things differently from what you expect?
You problem appears to be happening early in the boot-up process. Launchd (the thing that launches everything else) fails to load.
You probably have a corrupt image of Mac OS X, and will likely need to re-install Mac OS X (right over the version you are running now).
You can do this by holding command-R at startup, and choosing re-install Mac OS X as an option.
This could possibly be caused by a memory failure.
