Q: "Next tab" shortcut changed with El Capitan

This is really frustrating, because i use shortcuts on my mac every day.

The shortcuts for tabing in Safari has, up until now, been CTRL+ TAB and CTRL + SHIFT + TAB.

But after upgrading to El Capitan the shortcut apparently has changed, because the same shortcut now only opens the addressbar (what CMD + L also does).

I have tried to restore all shortcuts in "system preferences -> Keyboard", but that doesn´t help.

Whats even more frustrating is that noe of my El Capitan-friends has this problem, only me...

Please help me!

    Hello Mistersnekkenes,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

From your post I understand that the keyboard shortcuts for changing tabs in Safari is not working.  To start off with, the shortcuts have not changed in Safari with El Capitan, they remain the same as before:

Bring the next tab to the front

    Control-Tab or Shift-Command-]

Bring the previous tab to the front

    Control-Shift-Tab or Shift-Command -[

Given that your shortcuts have been changed at one point, I'd like you to check the App Shortcuts in the Keyboard System Preferences.  Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Shortcuts.  Then select App Shortcuts.  Here is the location I would like you to check for any custom Safari shortcuts that have been made.  It is possible the shortcut command to change tabs has been modified at one point.

    Take care.

Thank you for the quick reply!

I have checked and restored all shortcuts under Keyboard System Preferences one more time, with no luck. There is no special shortcuts made for tabing.

I did try to add special shortcuts for tabing and it worked to some extent. When i tab now, safari will first open the addresser and when i tab again, it tabs.

In other words, i have to tab 2 times to make safari tab 1. Not the most optimal solution.

Just to make it weirder, i changed the system language to English (from Norwegian), and in the English version everything works perfect!

So it seems to me that there is something wrong with the Norwegian version of my Safari. Going to double check on my other mac after i upgrade to El Capitan, but it looks like i have to change to English if i want to keep using Safari.

    Thanks again for the reply,

    Alex S

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.

Remember, to change default & existing keyboard shortcuts, 'Add' ( + ) a new shortcut to the Application (here would be Safari, yet I also did this with Finder Tab changing as well), and name the shortcut EXACTLY as in what the menu bar says/shows. Changing the name to something else will NOT override the default shortcut. Once typing in the same shortcut name, and setting up any (well, any undefined/unused shortcut, that is...), close your System Pref app and the app you changed the shortcut (here Safari), reopen app, and you should be able to use the newly assigned shortcut. BTW, I have set my tab-changing shortcuts for Safari & Finder, to Control+comma(,) & Control+period(.), and it works great. Good Luck!

PS: Obviously, you CAN make a simple new shortcut universal as it works in ALL apps, but I did not do so, and dealt with only the apps I wanted to change (Safari & Finder).
