Volume Problems on MacBook Air

Lately, I have noticed that when I turn on my computer with my headphones plugged into it. The noise of turning on the computer comes from the computer and not through the headphones. The sound setting when I click on the sound icon is on headphones so I don't know what to do. Anyone know what to do?
