My iMac acting like a Windows machine!!! Help.

Hello folks

Peter in UK here. Sadly I have built up quite a list of issues with my iMac and recently have been using it for business thus I may have a decent amount of questions for the forum if thats okay?

I have a 2008 purchased iMac which lately, Maybe for 6 months to a year has been acting very much like it has a bug. You know, when you had a mac and it had a zillion issues and would jump around, non responsive, be slow, that sort of thing.

I run Yosemite 10.10.5, I am a low level user. Have quite about 7000 photos on the system, use eBay, send emails and generally look at the web, No number crunching, no spread sheet programs, My activity monitor usually shows 90% plus availability of the CPU although a huge number of things appear to be using the CPU

I am not extremely tech savvy, Just letting you know.

So in short, I am thinking something is affecting the running of the machine in some way, or its getting tired? and possibly I need a new one. It originally started up almost instantly, now can take 30 seconds to a minute to run the bar across the bottom of the start screen, Maybe that tells us something.

Your thoughts, suggestions, anything most welcome

thanks, Peter

Peter, old mustang huh? Lucky you!

After downloading and unzipping the file you should have an icon like this

User uploaded file

Double click it and you'll be presented with the following

User uploaded file

Click the Start EtreCheck button and wait for it to finish. Click the Share Report button and choose Copy to Clipboard, the paste the report in a reply to this post.

When the machine becomes unresponsive, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Hello Mike

I can download it, but then nothing happens. Nothing to move forward with.

I have then went to find it in finder/downloads and its there but I cannot do anything with it.

Not to sound too dramatic but this happens with every single thing I do on this computer, I spend ages trying to research, I find a thread about the issue, I read the instructions and nothing appears to be the same on my system, menus don't have the choices or things don't just "run" as they should. Its my lot in life I am afraid. haha.

My Canon printer which was supposed to be "effortless" to operate came with 2 disks for windows, none for Mac, Took me a year to figure out how to use it and have only barely scratched the surface.

Anyway, enough of my woes.

thanks, Peter

Linc Davis, Thanks for your efforts. I am afraid I am pretty lost with your instructions.

I have looked up launchpad and I don't have that icon.

I do a search for Etre check and literally each time I do it in the window that comes up when I click on the magnifying glass at the top right of the screen I get a different result, again this is very typical for my computer/me. I have no idea how different things come up on the same search but they do.

I can get items up that appear to be Etre check related but none seem to be a menu to get it to run

thanks for your efforts.

I may be a lost cause.

Oct 10, 2015 10:31 AM in response to Linc Davis

Okay Linc, with a few cups of coffee in me and a google search for what Console means, I was fully able to do what you wanted me to do.

I will now wait for it to act poorly again and document the time and go from there.

I have somehow retrieved all my photos which mysteriously were unable to be found but still can't locate my music as most of my iTunes library is now not able to be found. I have performed the process the computer suggests and it still doesn't work. As I mentioned. Lots of issues with my computer.

Thanks, Peter

Okay, Linc

Computer is acting like crap right now. Sounds like a windows hard drive that is going mental, Usually right before a failure.

Email addresses removed.

cheers. peter

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
