Removed smtp settings and my emails have gone!!!!

Can anyone help? I had a problem sending messages using Mail where logins on two emails accounts are being rejected (outgoing only). I know the info is correct so I deleted the smtp server settings and re-inputted them to see if it would help. The process COMPLETELY DELETED ALL MY EMAILS!!!

I know that it happens if you remove the entire account but surely not if you just remove the smtp settings??

is there any way I can get the emails back? I don't have time machine running so that's not open to me.

Please help.
