Q: How do I Beak Timeline Into Segments?

Hey there, I want to be able to move a bunch of clips down the timeline so I can edit and work on that specific segment before adding it to the main clip.

I'm working next to someone with premiere and they can easily move clips down the timeline incase they want to add and edit in later or work on a different piece of the clip and join the 2 later on..

The moment I drag a clip down the timeline it shoots back to the main timeline.. Is there a way I can "break the clips from that timeline" and make a new space to work on and slide in later?

I may just have a setting wrong but can't figure it out???

Select your clips and hit P to bring up the position tool. See it to drag the clips to the position on the timeline where you want them to be. FCP will insert a gap clip automatically between the original and new position.

You are seeing the magnetic timeline in action.

Thanks to the magnetic timeline, clips automatically move when you insert things and everything remains in sync.

There are no empty portions of the timeline.

There is really no need, but if you still want to do what you said, you should switch to the Position tool (press 'p'), and you will be able to, er, position clips anywhere you want.

This will add a 'gap clip' to your timeline to fill the empty space.

Press 'a' to return to the usual Arrow tool.

You are obviously new to FCP X and as such I think you will benefit from following a few tutorials on it.

Look at fcpxbook.com, izzyvideo.com (the basic course is free and quite good), rippletraining.com, for some great instructional material.

Bear in mind that there is a lot of misinformation around and a lot of obsolete or poor quality videos about FCP X.

And, of course, there is this forum :-)
