Hello bbqbluebob,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand that your Calendar is appearing blank after upgrading to El Capitan. Since you mention items being sent to iCloud, were these events in iCloud? If so, simply enable iCloud Calendars in your System Preferences to have them appear again.
OS X Mountain Lion or later
After each step, check to see if the issue still exists.
If you see a server error 507
If you see a message that, “The server responded with ‘507’ to operation CalDAVWriteEntityQueueableOperation,” you've exceeded one or more iCloud Calendar limits. Remove some calendar data or reminder data from your iCloud account.
Turn on iCloud Calendar and upgrade your software
- Choose Apple () > System Preferences, click iCloud, and select Calendars (or Calendars & Reminders on OS X Mountain Lion).
- Upgrade to the latest version of OS X that's supported by your Mac.
Check your Internet connection
- Try to go to www.apple.com in Safari. If you can’t connect to the Internet, your iCloud calendars and events won’t update in the Calendar app. Get help with your Internet connection.
- Try to open a secure website from your Mac to see if you can access ports 80 and 443. If the website doesn't open, you don't have access. Contact your Internet service provider for help. Safari requires access to port 443 to push updates between iCloud and your devices.
Check your iCloud account details
Go to Apple () > System Preferences, and click iCloud. Make sure that you're signed in to the same iCloud account that you're using on your other supported devices.
Refresh your calendars
- Open Calendar.
- Choose View > Refresh Calendars.
If you're seeing issues with the iCloud Birthdays calendar, remember that it updates hourly. It might take up to an hour for changes to the birthday field in iCloud Contacts to show up in iCloud Calendar.
Check your default Calendar account
If you store and edit your events in the iCloud section of Calendar instead of another account section, like On My Mac, Exchange, or Google, iCloud will automatically update your calendars. Learn more about moving local calendars to iCloud.
If you use multiple accounts on your Mac like iCloud, Gmail, and Yahoo, make sure that iCloud is your default Calendar account:
- Open Calendar.
- Choose Calendar > Preferences.
- On the General tab, make sure that one of your iCloud calendars is the default.
Turn off iCloud Calendar and turn it back on
- Quit Calendar.
- Choose
Apple () > System Preferences, and click iCloud.- Deselect Calendars (or Calendars & Reminders on OS X Mountain Lion).
On OS X Mountain Lion and Mavericks, when asked, click Delete from Mac.- Close System Preferences and wait about a minute.
- Open System Preferences and choose iCloud.
- Select Calendars (or Calendars & Reminders on OS X Mountain Lion).
- Open Calendar.
Restart your computer
Restart your computer and check the issue.

Have a good one.
This is fairly useless for El Capitan. None of it works and the steps are no where near the same. As you can tell I am not happy that I lost all the calendars that were on my Mac.
