Q: Images/stills turn black in iMovie since El Capitan upgrade

Dear all,

Since I've upgraded to El Capitan, I'm having issues with images/stills in iMovie. While they do show up correctly as thumbnails in the project overview, they can't be previewed or rendered, turning up completely black instead. Audio/text overlays are all OK, the images are just black, all of them.

I've tried various image format (PNG, JPG, TIFF). I've also tried renaming images to some unique name (as suggested somewhere).

Older iMovie projects which I made before El Capitan, that used to be OK, now have the same problem. I can't include any stills.

The issue also occurs when creating a freeze frame ("Add Freeze Frame"): the freeze frame also becomes black when previewing / exporting.

My platforms:

OS X: El Capitan 10.11

iMovie: 8.0.6. (821)

Any help would be appreciated!

THIS is the solution that worked for me today - Macbook with El Capitan and iMovie 10.1:

    " MY SOLUTION:

Open the desired still frames in Preview and goto TOOLS > Resize > "Fit Into" > 1024x768 . Save.

And now I can drag and drop the stills into my video. It's worked on all that I've tried and now I can continue to make videos once again.

Installed 10.1.1 on my MacBookPro 2007.  Photo DSC00796.jpg from Rich Rydalch now displays fine BUT photo IMG_2142 from Jan Maschbaer shows black all the time (previously displayed as thumbnail in event but blacked out when selected or put in timeline).

Still running El Capitan 10.11.2.  Will try again after update to El Capitan 10.11.3.

Just updated to 10.1.1 and it resolved the problem.  HOWEVER, for projects already started and photos already imported, I found I had to delete them and start all over.  If I used the previously imported photos, they were still black.  If I imported them again for a new project, they were OK.

Yes in my previous post the versions already imported in 10.1 were still black.  I had to delete and reimport to see a change.

Now I tried creating a new project and dragged and dropped stills into the timeline.  Same results.  DSC00796.jpg  OK.   IMG_2142 shows black.   IMG_2142 .png and .tif versions also don't work but .pdf version does.   I am now running OS 10.11.3.

"With imovie 9 and earlier the only successful workaround I have seen reported is to convert stills to video clips."

How do you do that??? A still from a video clip, simple, but in reverse...

I just did a quick test with two large images, and it looks like it is fixed- at least for me!

The link is:      Link to this post

but the poster (Lnkout) used an earlier OS version to export a video from the still then reimported that into iMovie 9 under El Capitan.

I think one really has to upgrade to iMovie 10.1.1 to work properly under El Capitan.  10.1.1 was released yesterday and seems to fix most of the remaining bugs but iMovie 9 is obsolete since 2013 and I would not expect any updates.

looks like an official support document was also released with 10.1.1 addressing the issues with still images... If still images are solid green or black in the iMovie Viewer - Apple Support

Jan Maschbaer:   Do your photos now work in iMovie 10.1.1 with AMD Radeon HD 6490M graphics selected?

James Cude:   Thanks for the link to today's Apple article on the problem.

    Good morning,

now, with iMovie 10.1.1 I have resolved the problem with the black pictures in a video.

My problem now is that in an imported project of iMovie 9 (it is in 16:9) the pictures ar narrow, but I look for information in another foro.

    Thanks.

James - We updated to 10.1.1 and it seems that our problem is finally resolved.

Thanks to all who pressured Apple to work through the issues and find a resolution.

Good work too GeeD you're like a dog with a bone...

    Cheers

    Scott

Been thinking about updating to El Capitan.  Currently have iMAC 27" purchased Jan 2014 using OS 10.9.5 and Graphic Card NVIDIA Ge Force GTX 775M.  I have been using iMovie 8.0.6 for a long time as I am able to create movies (reunions, family) with leader trailer and burned to DVD, not sent to the cloud.  Most of videos consist of photos which are mostly sized to 1540x1100.   I have 3 videos in process each over 30 minutes long, so far.  I see iMovie 10 has been updated and working in most cases relative to the "black photos" but I'm concerned about doing the update to iMovie 10 on the movies in process.  Besides I have lots of old movies generated by iMovie that I sometimes need to access.    Do I dare update my iMAC to El Capitan?
