Can I upgrade an older version of OS X to, say Mavericks, instead of upgrading awl the way to the newest version?

I have several Macs, and I have Mavericks on one, which works fine.

Another has an older version of OS X. Can I upgrade it to Mavericks, (or at least OX 10.6, or Mountain Lion etc), instead of upgrading all the way.

I don't want to upgrade to the latest just yet, because every time I upgrade to a newer version of the OS, something I rely on breaks.

(Which is why I never upgrade all of them at the same time - but wait until I am sure the upgrade hasn't ruined something.)

Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Mavericks and Yosemite are no longer offered by Apple.

...and I have Mavericks on one...

Did you download Mavericks from the App Store and install it on that Mac, or did that Mac come with Mavericks?

If you downloaded Mavericks, then it is still available to your in your App Store -> Purchases tab.

If the Mac was shipped with Mavericks, then you can no longer get Mavericks, nor Yosemite.

If you downloaded Lion or Mountain Lion in the past, they too will be in your App Store -> Purchases tab. If you have never downloaded Lion or Mountain Lion, then they can be purchased from Apple. They would give you a redemption code to allow you to download either Lion or Mountain Lion.
