Help restoring post change of email

My phone was recently stolen, and I am now trying to get my apple data onto a new iphone, but I have having issues.

I have had to update my email address on the apple ID as the old one was an old work email account which does not exist, now when I try and restore the settings onto a new iphone it firstly asks me for my apple ID, which is fine, then select the backup I want, but then it comes up with the following:

'Enter the apple ID password for OLD EMAIL@Address to use for store purchases (including the App Store, itunes store and iBooks store). however I am unable to do this as the password is not accepted.

I have tried changing the primary email on my ID, but as the email account is no longer active, I am unable to verify the change.
