Q: OS X El Capitan - Contacts App not working

I am running OS X El Capitan 10.11 (15A284) on a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012). It works fine for the most part, but I can't open the Contacts app. It just seems to crash upon every click. I don't see anything of the application at all. I think it is also effecting my iMessages application also, Not all my contacts emails, mobiles appear when starting a new conversation, Including my own. I can't find some contacts when I

If anyone knows anything, I'd appreciate some advice or help.

    Hi,

If you go to Applications/Utilities and the Console App does it say anything in the All Messages section ?

It may pay to clear the Log and try to launch Contacts again to show it more clearly.

IF you go to the Applications Folder and highlight the app and then use CMD+i keys together what version does it say it is ?

It should be version 9 in El Capitan.

I have the very same Mac, very same OS, and very same problem. I have had the problem since the moment that I upgraded to El Capitan.

My contacts (which sync in iCloud) are just fine on my Mac running Yosemite, my iPhone, and my iPad.

I appreciate the reply, Ralph, but I don't understand what "the choice" is.

    Hi,

In System Preferences and then either iCloud or Internet Account you have made a choice of how the Contacts App is syncing with your other devices.

I was talking about unticking, deselecting, unchoosing or some other word for cancelling the current setting and then remaking it.

I have solved this problem on my MacBook Pro:

    I went to:

    ~ : Library : Application Support : Address Book

and removed the Address Book folder, placing it in the Trash. At that point, Contacts would launch although I was missing my entries. However, all of my entries were previously synchronized to iCloud and various cloud-groups. Within a few minutes, my entries repopulated. It took a bit longer for all of the images (nearly 3,000 of them) to come in, but they eventually arrived as well.

In my case Contacts would crash every time I tried to search a name... the above process solved the problem

Call me crazy, but when I look in the application support folder I don't find a folder for "address book." I'm running the latest version of El Capitan on a Mac PowerBook, no bells and whistles or add on stuff. What am I doing wrong? I am not confusing the System Library with the other library.

I'm a very old man (I had one of the original Macs) so please be kind to me.

    Hi,

This is in the Library that is in your Home Folder (the one with the Little House icon)

It is hidden and has been in the later version of the OS.

Open Finder window then Hold down the ALT key whilst selecting the Go Menu and select the Library that appears.

    Then you can navigate.
