how do I login to my MAC remotely from the other side of the world

I have my MAC remote login enabled. However it tells me how I can connect to it "ssh ----@123.456.789.101." for example. However the IP that it is displaying is my LAN local IP address for that Node. I do know my global IP address, however, I need to know the steps on how do I connect to my network with my global IP and once there how do I connect to that particular Node on my LAN? Do I need to setup a VPN or can I just somehow losing using just the SSH? I know just enough to know what your talking about if you explained it but not enough to figure it out on my own by just doing some light research. Thank you for any help.

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)
