My first guess would be that you may have a problematic font installed on your computer. The first thing I'd try is opening the application "Font Book" (in your Applications folder). When you open it, select "All Fonts" from the sidebar. Then from the file menu select "Validate Fonts". This will scan all the fonts on your system, look for errors or failures after it finishes scanning. Generally, if I find serious errors, I delete the font. I've seen this happen with fonts downloaded from the internet. There's a good knowledge base article about this here: Font Book (Yosemite): Validate fonts. It should work with 10.11.
