Java Issues

I keep getting a pop up telling me to update the version of Java on my Mac. I have followed the directions numerous times to install this update, each time given the message that it was successfully installed. I still keep getting the pop up (think it has something to do with chrome). When I follow instructions with the pop up I get link after link of addressing the issues. I feel like this is a big black hole. It seems like there are always issues with the apple computer. if anyone has a solution, I would greatly appreciate it.
