Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download El Capitan from the Mac App Store.

I've tried but it won't download. it doesn't even give a message of any type. UGH
What happens then when you try to download?
In the Mac App Store, the Download button should change to "Downloading..." and you should get a progress bar under Purchases.
You need to tell us exactly what is happening.
So when I pull up Apps and the icons pop up all of them have either a $ amount or GET. The El Cap icon had DOWNLOAD. When I click on it the pinwheel turns for a few seconds and then disappears. It never say anything about downloading like it normally does. It doesn't do anything.
Try force quitting the Mac App Store App. Force an app to close on your Mac - Apple Support
Open it again, and try again.
Thanks for all of your suggestions. The App store wasn't jammed. I can open and close it as needed. It just doesn't seem to want to download OR provide an explanation as to why it won't. Maybe it's just not in the cards today. LOL
Are you have administrative privileges on the computer?
If you go to System Preferences>Parental Controls are any Restrictions set for purchasing from the Mac App Store for your user name?
No parental controls in place as I'm the only one that uses this computer. But that was a good thought! Thank you!
- Try starting in Safe Mode
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
- Boot to Recovery and repair the startup disk
