Q: My iMac shuts down without warning

Hello, I'm looking for clues on this and appreciate any help or advice.  I think the "writing is on the wall" but I hope the iMac is easily (cheaply?) repaired (time for a new machine?).  I like the machine and it is mostly fast enough for my needs.

Here is the post of my panic report.   I've had repeated shutdowns lately.  I recently (yesterday) upgraded the operating system via the "App Store" update for free.  OS X El Capitan.  iMac (27-inch, Late 2009).  Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.  Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3.  Graphic ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB.

Upgrading seemed to help some.  Before that, the machine would often get "stuck" and not be able to do anything (spinning rainbow cursor).  Then suddenly wake up and be able to resume normally with no visible speed problems.  BTW, I have backed everything up also.

Thank You,

Bob

Please post the complete KP report.  Instructions for getting to it are at Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic - Apple Support, once we see the full KP report we can look for something that may be causing yours. KPs can be tough to diagnose as they can come from failing hardware (RAM and HD's are common) as well as software.

Unfortunately it's incomplete. Please click the link I provided and it has instructions, if you already followed the instructions and posted what showed up in the Diagnostic Reports folder then okay we can try another route. Just let me know please.

Here's the "report" sent to apple, which seems a slightly different KP report (but basically the same from my eyes).  I've read the instructions from the link provided but the iMac has no peripheral devices or discs attached.  It could be I need "advanced" recovery information or software troubleshooting.. geniusbar?  Thanks for trying to help, I appreciate it.

Okay, lets take a different route. Please post a complete EtreCheck report of your system. We can then look for any obvious issues that may be causing your problem.

I see a few things, First is you seem to use several Google apps, these have a reputation of causing issues, if you can steer away from them or at the very least ensure they are up-to-date then that may help. In addition, you have had your machine for many years now and it has a lot of apps, Internet Plugins, and launch daemons. My suspicion is you probably have apps that have not been updated in some time. I would recommend first systematically going through your app library and getting each app up-to-date. In addition, look at all the Internet Plugins too and see that they are up-to-date and eliminate the ones you no longer need.

Finally I see the computer was only up for 1  hour when you ran the report, if you get another KP, then run the EtreCheck report again immediately and also post the complete KP per the Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic - Apple Support article.

Thank you.  I think it's interesting that as of this moment, there are quite a few users having serious problems with Google Drive.  I just hope its not some kind of hacking attempt.

Whilst I can't suggest a fix or workaround, it seems to me that the panic in your case involved enforcement of code signing.

Same thing here on a Mac Mini. 10.11.2, pretty much no software (no Google Chrome, no Flash) running Plex Media Server and a Thunderbolt storage array through a Thunderbolt dock, no other devices save a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, connected via ethernet.

Another odd thing I've noticed is that the Screen Sharing service disables itself after reboot. I typically run this unit headless, but while file services are still enabled in Sharing after reboot, Screen Sharing disables itself. Logging in with iCloud, not much else. Anybody else have any similar setups?

A small update to anyone reading this post.

I have since stopped using Chrome, version 47.0.2526.106 (64-bit), the issue stopped as well.
