Q: What does the green running man mean

Hi all,

I Used the workout app for an 'other' workout for about an hour and a half and ended things, saving the workout. Since then I have a small green running man at the top of the clock face - where the red notification dot appears, or the locked padlock etc.

Can an someone tell me what this icon means or how I can get rid of it?

Thanks,

Dan

    Hi Dan

This means that you have a workout in progress.

To end it, go to the Workout app: Home screen (single press on the Digital Crown) > Workout app (runner on green background) > end the workout.

To end the workout from within the app: Firmly press the display and tap End or Pause. You can also swipe all the way to the left to see the option to end or pause your workout. Scroll down to save or discard your workout. More information:

    Hi Jonathan,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I have ended and saved the workout, whenever I go into the workout app I just get the list of available workouts (see image) and a firm screen press just gives a 'screen wobble'.

Do you have any other suggestions?

    Hi Dan

Try restarting both your iPhone and your watch. Turn both devices off first, then restart your iPhone before restarting your watch:

    - To turn your watch off: press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; drag it to turn off.

    - To turn it back on: press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.

    Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for that, that's solved the problem.

    It's a bit of a strange one.

The watch doesn't seem to be as straight forward/ intuitive as the phone to operate (for me anyway)

    Thanks again,

    Dan

I had exactly the same problem.  ...all I did was start a new exercise and immediately end it and the problem was solved.

Other iPhone apps (in addition to Apple's Workout app) may be running in "Workout" mode; ensure that none of these are active.  Strava, for example, will ask to integrate with your Health "Workouts" and show the green running icon while recording.  It's easy to forget that you left these apps recording a workout in the background.

If you use Strava (a third-party fitness app):

This issue can occur when you have an activity paused in Strava on your watch. If this is the case, end the paused activity from within Strava on your watch.

Otherwise (or if the Workout icon is still shown on your watch after ending a paused activity), it may help to temporarily turn off Strava's ability to share (write) data to the Health app on your iPhone:

    - On your iPhone, in the Health app: Sources > Strava > under "Allow Strava to Write Data", turn off Heart Rate.

    - Enable the setting again before next recording a workout with Strava.

When using Strava, to prevent this issue from happening in future, finish and save your activity from the Strava app on your watch, not from Strava on your iPhone.

adding my 2 cents: i have tried every possible way of making my watch go back to 'normal', but none worked

once i uninstalled strava on the watch, it went away, so i knew the problem was strava. turns out it wasn't a half-stopped session, it was the fact that i had strava on the watche's glances. simply switching strava glance off on the phone app manager, the watch would go back to normal immediately.

The running figure actually means that the watch is reading heart rate continuously. So if you have any app that enables continuous heart rate monitoring (such as "Cardiogram") you will see that icon.
