I have a mac mini in my office that has a problem when doing anything from surfing the web, to watching a movie locally on the hard drive. the Mac will shut off at random times and i think i might be a cpu overheating issue but i wanted to make sure and see if anyone else has had similar issues. its the second gen mac mini with the dual core, and i swapped the hdd with a 1tb and upgraded the ram to 8gb

- Install a temp and fan speed monitor app like Macs Fan Control or iStat and see if the fan speed and temperatures ore OK
- Note the time of the next freeze. After rebooting open the Console app in Finder>Applications>Utilities and look for log entries at the time of the freeze. Post suspicious ones here.
so ive taken the min apart and ran it without the cover and noticed that the fan is not running whatsoever. would the fan just stop working and i would have to buy a new one?
Yes, without a fan the Mac will overheat abut will turn off before damage occurs.
When did this start? After you took it apart and put it back together? maybe you damaged the the connection.
Does the fan blade spin freely by hand?Select your Mac Mini here . It should list a replacement fan and provide other repair info.
