double check that you don't have do not disturb enabled.

The way Apple set up Do Not Disturb is very counterintuitive. We went through the same issue and two visits to the Genius Bar didn't solve it. Phone calls, emails and texts had no sounds associated with them when the phone was asleep. It turned out that the Manual button in the Do Not Disturb setting needs to be off. It would have been much better had they labeled it Do Not Disturb-On/Off.
