9.0.1 Locks Snow Leopard out of iTunes/iPhone sync

After upgrading my iPhone 5S to IOS 9.0.1, iTunes greets my connected phone with the message, "The iPhone cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. That new version happens to be incompatible with Snow Leopard. Like countless other Mac users, upgrading to another system is currently not an option for me. Please tell me there is a way to downgrade to IOS 8 without losing all the contents of my phone. Please understand, providing instructions to tell me how to use iTunes to access my backup is useless, because that connection was blocked by the "upgrade." The issue is specific to iTunes 11.4 and IOS 9.0.1. There are no later versions (as far as I am aware) of iTunes that are compatible with Snow Leopard. Ideas?
