Newer version if iTunes required after restoring iPhone 5

SO I backed up my iPhone 5, then restored it and of course iTunes automatically upgraded the IOS.

From there, I chose "restore from backup" and it began....

but then this message popped up

"iPhone cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to itunes.com to download the latest version"

I went to help - check for updates - and it says I DO have the latest version of iTunes and no updates are available.

SO - now what? Is there some other way to find a 'new' version? Or am I just out of luck in restoring from my backup....
